How To Choose The Best Bass Guitar For You

Image of one of the best electric bassesPicking the best guitar is not difficult.  All the renowned brands are excellent being loaded with brilliant features which makes your decision relatively painless.

Therefore, the first thing you need to know is ‘What to look For in A Bass Guitar’.

Professional musicians and guitarists don’t choose a guitar only because it’s the best on the market; they opt for it when it meets their requirement.

What Do You Need In A Bass Guitar

You also need to know your ‘REQUIREMENTS’.

Of course, it is not possible for a beginner to comprehend their requirements, but there are a few questions you can ask that will help you.  For example:

  • What kind of music genre do you like?
  • What’s your budget for a bass guitar?
  • How much should you spend to meet your requirements?
  • Are you looking for a specific brand of bass guitar?
  • Is the bass for learning and practicing only or for stage performances too?
  • Do you have large hands or small hands? Yes, there are short-scale bass guitars as well.
  • Which bass guitar is comfortable to play?
  • Do you need a single coil pickup or dual coil pickup? Study this!
  • Can you use it for both big stages and studio recordings?
  • And, lastly, does it have tone versatility?

These questions will assist you in choosing the best bass guitar to serve you well throughout your learning to play phase.
But, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Important Features To Consider In A Bass Guitar

You need some additional information about bass guitars.  There are so many things that will have an impact on your decision.  The more you know, the better your decision.

For example, firstly, and most importantly, you need to know about the strings.

Closeup image of bass guitar stringsMost bass guitars are available in 4-string or 5-string models.

Experts recommend a 4-string bass guitar for beginners, since they are in the learning process.  In reality, better than 90% of bass players, even professionals, use 4-string guitars over the course of their entire life.

It doesn’t mean you can’t get a 5-string guitar.

A 5-string guitar means you have an extra string which produces a deeper bass range.  It is specifically for those guitarists who are into “heavier” styles of music like Heavy Metal.

In case you are thinking:  Why don’t experts recommend 5-string bass guitars?  it is because the extra string makes the entire instrument more difficult to play.  Particularly for beginners who are educating themselves on the basics of playing. There is nothing adverse in opting for a 4-string guitar.  They produce high-quality sound and are used by professional guitarists in studios and on stage as well.

Another point to understand is guitar neck lengths.

The standard size of a guitar neck is 34” long.  A neck longer than 34”, is recommended for larger hands or fat fingers.  The longer length is more difficult to handle causing your arms to tire quicker than with a 34” neck.

There are short scale bass guitars also, which are easier to handle.  They are for persons who have short fingers and don’t want to exhaust themselves while learning and practicing tones development.

These are all points to consider before you purchase your guitar.

Below are the top 10 best bass guitars for beginners.  They are modern, innovative, carry A++ ratings, and they have been used by thousands of professionals.

The Best Bass Guitars For Beginners

Best Bass Guitars For BeginnersPicking the best bass guitar for a beginner really depends upon their needs. What style of music do they plan on playing? How important is the look and style of the bass? Will it be used to play in a working band? What sized hands does the player have? How important is the weight of the bass?

These are the type of questions you need to think about when buying a new bass guitar. Not all of the electric basses will fit your need.

Here is our list and brief reviews of the best bass guitars for beginners we think you should consider.

Bass Guitar Buying Guide

In 1975 I began my journey into the music world by starting to learn how to play bass guitar. For almost 45 years I have never regretted that decision. It has been one of the joys of my life.

Today, I am giving to you some of the insights I have learned over the years so you too can experience the joy of being a bassist. Everybody starts somewhere and this bass guitar buying guide will help you get started.

Who This Bass Guitar Buying Guide Is For

Image of one of the best electric bassesAfter you get your fingers calloused from hours of playing bass, you learn some of the things you like and don’t like in bass guitars. However if you are new, you do not know everything there is to know about buying a bass. Or you are reading this because you are going to buy your child their first bass guitar. This guide is for you.

Experienced players know what they want. Inexperienced players or parents need to do a little research. If that is you. Then keep reading. You will get your questions answered here.

Types Of Bass Guitars

There are two types of bass guitars and 3 types of basses. I will briefly go over each type and share with you why we recommend only one type of bass for the new bass player.

  1. An Acoustic Bass Violin: Although this is not part of the guitar family, the bass guitar is modeled after it. It has the same 4 strings, the same pitch, and the same fingering on the fret board. It was used in jazz bands and early rock n roll bands like Bill Haley and the Comets, before the electric bass guitar was replaced it in most bands in the 1960’s.
  2. An Acoustic Bass Guitar: This bass guitar was first invented in the 1960’s but really didn’t see production until the 1970’s. It was designed to compliment an acoustic guitar. It has limited uses and tones but works well for some types of quieter music.
  3. An Electric Bass Guitar: An electric bass is similar in construction and design as an electric guitar. However it is tuned 1 octave lower than the first 4 strings of a guitar. It is also larger and has a longer neck than a typical electric guitar. It is much more versatile than the acoustic bass violin or the acoustic bass guitar. You can reproduce almost any sound you want since it is electric and uses pickups to send the sound to an amplifier.

Because of its versatility and easy of play, we recommend that a new bass player start learning on an electric bass guitar.

Bass Guitar Anatomy

image of all the part that make up a bass guitar for a bass guitar buying guide

Body Style:

Electric bass guitars are most normally built with a solid-body, although there are a few sem-hollow body basses available that give a rounder and more acoustic sound. Recently there have been some basses on the market that are true acoustic basses.

Closeup image of bass guitar stringsNeck:

Deciding what type of neck your electric bass should have depends on the size of your hands. Necks come in several shapes: round, oval, flat back, “vee” and asymmetrical (thinner either on bass or treble side). Naturally, if you are interested in a 5 or 6-string bass, the neck is going to be wider out of necessity.

Scale Length:

Scale length is the vibrating length of the string, which is determined by the distance between “nut” and the bridge “saddle.” The frets are spaced based on ratio. The longer scales have more distance between frets. Scale length influences both the tone quality of the notes produced and the amount of tension on the string at a certain pitch.

For a more defined sound on the low B string of a five-string bass, a longer neck is advisable. A shorter scale is acceptable for 4-string bass, is good for smaller hands, and will make the G string sing out.

Common bass scales are Short Scale: 30 inches; Medium Scale: 32 inches; Long Scale (Standard): 34 inches; 5 string long scale: 35″; Extra-long Scale: 36 inches.

Squier Jazz Bass review imageTuning machines:

The type of tuning machine (or pegs) your guitar has is very important. This is what allows you to fine tune and hold pitch. Enclosed tuning machine heads resist rust and airborne corrosives, and therefore don’t require as much maintenance or replacement as open tuning machines.

Bolt-On Vs. Neck-Through Neck Attachment:

Neck-through basses, in which the neck goes through the body, are stronger, have better sustain and note resolution. Bolt-on necks have a punchier sound but are more likely to have dead spots. Most beginner basses have bolt-on necks,

Fingerboard:

A coated fingerboard helps produce a whining, trebly “fretless sound” and longer sustain which wears much longer with round-wound strings. Uncoated fingerboards have a warmer, more natural sound.

Number of Frets:

A bass can have 21, 22, or 24 frets. Most bass playing takes place in the lower positions, so this is a matter of personal taste.

squire jazz bass pickups imagePickups:

The pickups are important to the sound of a bass, ranked right up there with strings as a method of defining your sound. They probably have more effect on your final sound of your bass than whatever combinations of woods are chosen in an electric bass for that perfect tone.

To complicate the issue, a pickup can give quite different results on different basses. Changing strings will affect a pickup’s response as well. New strings are clearer and brighter but over time they will mellow in the sound they produce.

Several active and passive pickups are available for bass. When choosing a bass with active pickups, remember that the battery life and the need for replacement will become an issue.

Wood:

Choice of woods naturally affects the tone and weight of a guitar, but so do several other factors. A lightweight wood is advantageous for performing standing up, since bass guitars can be rather large and heavier than an acoustic guitar or electric guitar.

Common woods for bass are swamp ash, a lighter weight soft wood which produces a punchy tone and low midrange sounds. Alder is another lightweight wood that produces a crisper tone. Although many bassists like to obsess over the minutia of the woods in all honesty, the important question for you is whether you like the sound of the instrument you are playing.

Finish:

With electric bass guitars, the type of finish does not affect sound as much as it does on acoustic guitars, but you needn’t worry about it in either case. Guitar makers take this into account when they build the instrument. What you do want to take into consideration is how durable the finish is. If you are prone to wearing a belt buckle, the finish will help keep your bass from getting scratched.

Bass Guitar Sizes

As we talked about earlier, the size of the bass is determined by the scale of the neck. A smaller scale size makes the bass smaller than a larger one.

Beyond that, there are different styles of bass bodies that will change the overall size of a bass. Just pay attention to the shape of the body and its overall size.

Woods Used In Building A Bass Guitar

The type of wood that is used in the body of a bass guitar will affect its tone and resonance. New bass players don’t need to be too concerned with the type of wood used for their bass guitar body. But if you are looking for a specific sound from your bass, then the body wood could be an important factor.

Here are the more common woods used in a bass guitar.

  • Alder Alder is often used for bass guitar bodies. It creates a very balanced tone, with great clarity and a very full sound.
  • Agathis Agathis is a popular body wood because it is relatively inexpensive. It provides a balanced tone with a slight emphasis on low-mid tones that gives it a rich sound.
  • Ash There are several species of ash used on bass guitar bodies, with subtle differences, but in general the wood produces a bright, full sound, like alder. Swamp ash is especially desirable due to its beautiful grain.
  • Basswood Frequently used on less expensive instruments, it is a softer wood that does not resonate as much as other tone wood options. Some bass players think this creates a flat sound, while others feel the short sustain is ideal for fast, complex playing techniques.
  • Mahogany Mahogany is a popular tone wood for bass guitars because it produces a soft, warm tone that emphasizes the low-mid and lower-range tones and creates longer sustain. It is a dense wood, however, and will feel heavier on your shoulder than ash or Agathis.
  • Maple Maple is also a dense wood, so it creates a well-sustained sound like mahogany. Maple, however, produces a bright, clear tone that many musicians find valuable in a studio setting.

How To Choose The Right Bass Guitar For You

Image of one of the finest electric bass guitarsHere are a few suggestions to go by for the first-time bass buyer:

  • Buy the best bass you can afford. Nothing is harder to play than an inferior bass. A good bass guitar will make learning easier and it will last you longer as you grow in your ability.
  • Choose a fretted bass guitar. It is hard enough to learn to be a good bassist without adding the extra challenge of placing your fingers in exactly the right spot.
  • Choose a short-scale bass if you are young, small framed, or have smaller hands than the average person.
  • For simplicity’s sake, start with a 4-string bass guitar. Once you have mastered that, then consider 5 or 6 string basses
  • Select a bass with simple volume and tone controls so you can focus on the playing and not on the bells and whistles.
  • Choose a bass in a color and shape that you like. Its looks is not going to effect the sound all that much but if you like it, it will motivate you to become a better bassist.
